Who is Robert Jones?
A Short Story by Last Century Studios

Morning light crept through the blinds of a small apartment in New York as Adam slowly opened his eyes. At twenty years old, he already carried the quiet discipline of someone who lived a double life. To most people he was just another young man in the city, but in reality Adam was a trained spy. He rose from bed, brewed a cup of coffee, and sat down in the living room with the television murmuring softly in the background.

As he stared at the screen without really watching it, a thought began to bother him. Julia had not come home the night before. His wife always left a message if she was going somewhere late. Adam checked his phone again, but there were no calls or texts. A quiet uneasiness settled in his chest.

Just as he reached for his coffee, his phone rang. The name of his boss flashed across the screen. Adam answered, already knowing the tone that would follow. His boss spoke briefly and firmly, explaining that a mission had just come up and Adam was needed immediately. There was no room for hesitation in the spy world.

Adam listened silently, but his thoughts were somewhere else. Julia was missing, and the feeling that something was wrong would not leave him. His boss expected loyalty and obedience, yet Adam could not ignore the worry growing inside him. After the call ended, he sat for a moment staring at the dark television screen.

Finally, Adam made his decision. The mission would have to wait. Finding Julia mattered more.

He began searching their apartment for anything that might tell him where she had gone. In the bedroom he noticed Julia’s journal sitting slightly open on the nightstand. Normally he would never read it, but the situation felt different now. Carefully, he flipped through a few pages until one entry caught his attention.

The name “Robert Jones” appeared several times in her handwriting. The entry spoke about meeting someone important and finally learning the truth about her past. Adam had never heard that name before, but the way Julia wrote about him sounded serious. It was the first real clue Adam had.

Using his spy training, Adam began tracking down any information he could about Robert Jones. The trail led him across several parts of the city, following small details and records. The search felt less like a mission and more like a race against his own fear.

But Adam’s journey did not stay quiet for long. In a narrow street between tall apartment buildings, two familiar figures stepped out to block his path. They were fellow spies “friends” he had worked with before. Their expressions were not friendly today.

“You should have listened to the boss,” one of them said coldly.

Adam understood immediately. They had been sent to bring him back. When he refused, the situation quickly turned physical. The fight was short but brutal. Though Adam managed to defend himself, he walked away bruised and exhausted, his face cut and his jacket torn.

Despite the pain, Adam refused to stop searching. The clue about Robert Jones led him to a quiet neighborhood house on the edge of the city. The place looked calm and ordinary, almost too peaceful after everything he had been through.

Adam approached carefully and looked through the window. Inside, he saw Julia sitting at a small table. Relief washed over him instantly as he realized that she was safe. Across from her sat an older man who looked surprisingly similar to her.

For a moment Adam didn’t understand what he was seeing. But as he listened through the slightly open window, the truth slowly became clear. The man’s name was Robert Jones, and Julia was speaking to him about her childhood and the life she had never known.

Robert Jones was her biological father.

Julia had been adopted when she was young, something Adam himself had never known about. Recently she had discovered information that led her to Robert, and she had spent a night traveling to a small town to meet him for the first time. The two of them sat quietly drinking tea, speaking gently as they tried to understand the years they had missed.

Adam finally knocked on the door. When Julia opened it, surprise crossed her face before quickly turning into concern as she noticed his injuries. Adam simply smiled, tired but relieved.

“I just needed to know you were safe,” he said quietly.

Julia explained everything, and Robert welcomed Adam inside. Sitting in the warm kitchen, Adam felt the tension of the day slowly fade. The mission he had ignored and the fight he had endured no longer seemed important.

Though bruised and exhausted, Adam finally allowed himself to relax. Julia was safe, and sometimes that was the only mission that truly mattered.
